Physical activity and structured/unstructured recreational opportunities do more than promote good physical and emotional development in children and youth. They provide an opportunity to relate to others and gain a valuable sense of achievement; the development of social skills; outlets for positive, constructive behavior and; contribute to strengthening the capacity of Nova Scotia Mi'kmaq communities.


2007-2008 Workplan Goals
1- All MK, French and English Public School students will have Daily Physical Activity (DPA) (min. 20 minutes in a school day).
2- 50% of MK schools will have a policy on healthy eating practices.
3- Establish baseline data and include the number of people active, number of programs and health and social determinants.
4- Complete and evaluate pilot projects funded through the bilateral agreement to establish physical activity, sport and recreation programs and plans and the use of research project by SMU.
5- Leadership in physical activity, sport and recreation.
6- Clarify the roles and responsibilities of an Aboriginal Sport Governing Body and communities and how they work together.
7- Awareness campaign regarding support services (e.g.- website, human resource expertise, video conferencing)
