Education Committee

To have Nova Scotia M'kmaq, the Province of Nova Scotia and the Government of Canada discuss issues, develop solutions and suggest actions with respect to Mi'kmaw education in Nova Scotia.

The focus is on all education programs from early childhood to adult education. As well, related issues that impact Mi’kmaw students. The goal is to make a difference at the community level.

The Education Working Committee includes representatives from:

- The Confederacy of Mainland Mi'kmaq
- Union of Nova Scotia Indians
- Nova Scotia Native Women's Association
- Mi'kmaq Language Center of Excellence
- Kjipuktuk College
- Mi'kmaw Kina'matnewey
- Indian & Northern Affairs Canada
- Office of Aboriginal Affairs
- Nova Scotia Department of Education
- Nova Scotia Department of Education:
- Public Schools Branch, Mi’kmaq Services Division
- Skills and Learning Branch

2007-2008 Workplan Goals
1- Restoration and preservation of the Mi'kmaq language in Nova Scotia.
2- To promote lifelong learning and employability for the Mi'kmaw communities.
3- To promote communications for Mi'kmaw education activities in Nova Scotia.
4- To promote Early Childhood Development/Family Literacy in Mi'kmaw communities.
